"This Isn't the End" is the third track on Owl City's fourth EP, Ultraviolet, and later re-released as the tenth and final track on Owl City's fifth album, Mobile Orchestra.

Lyrics[]

[Verse 1]
An eight year old girl had a panic attack,
'Cause the father she loved left and never looked back.
No longer the hero she counted on
He told her he loved her, and then he was gone.

[Verse 2]
She tried to look happy in front of her friends,
But she knew that she'd never feel normal again.
She fought back the tears as they filled her eyes,
And wanted him back just to tell him goodbye.

[Chorus]
When the rain falls down,
When it all turns around,
When the light goes out,
This isn't the end.

[Verse 3]
Her dad was a good guy that everyone liked.
But nobody knew he was dying inside.
He promised his family he'd be alright,
And then with a gunshot, he left them behind.

[Chorus]
When the rain falls down,
When it all turns around,
When the light goes out,
This isn't the end.

When the rain falls down,
When it all turns around,
When the light goes out,
This isn't the end...no.

[Verse 4]
The role of a father he never deserved;
He abandoned his daughter, and never returned.
And over the years, though the pain was real;
She finally forgave him, and started to heal.

[Outro]
How close is the ending, well nobody knows.
The future's a mystery, and anything goes.
Love is confusing, and life is hard.
You fight to survive, 'cause you made it this far.
It's all too astounding to comprehend.

It's just the beginning, this isn't the end.
It's just the beginning, this isn't the end.

Trivia[]

  • Owl City released the commentary for This Isn't the End as part of the Mobile Orchestra commentary, nearly a year after the visualizer's release on YouTube.[1]
  • The story behind the song, Owl City explains that it is "...loosely based on my mother's story, you know her father left her when she was very young, and some of the damage it did to her, I feel like it took her a lot of years to get over that...". [1]
  • Continuing he says, "...this subject matter is, in this song, is difficult though it may be, it's something somebody out there needs to hear. It's an idea a lot of people can connect with, losing a parent or growing up without a parent, I feel like it's very common." [1]
  • Lastly he finishes saying, "So my hope is that this song is an encouragement to somebody out there, who needs this hope for healing." [1]
